School Prospectus - Admissions To Abbey Lane

For admission during the school year 2005-2006 children born between September 1, 2000 and August 31, 2001 must have their name registered at their preferred school before January 31st 2005. They must also have returned the relevant Admission Form (available only from the LEA) to Sheffield Education Department (or to the school where we will process it for you).

This does not guarantee a place at our school and parents are now asked to make three choices in order of preference. The Director of Education will allocate places according to strictly defined criteria, set out in the Authority's admissions policy. Parents/carers are encouraged to contact the school(s) of their choice and make an appointment to look round and ask questions. We welcome such visits from prospective parents / carers.

Further details about admissions may be obtained from the school, or from the Pupils Section of the Education Department (0114 2735766 ).

Starting School

Our programme is intended to make the transition from home to school as smooth as possible, and to be sensitive to the needs of pupils and parents/carers.

We seek to develop an open and trusting relationship which helps all parties to be at ease as quickly as possible.

We invite you to a series of visits to school in the weeks before your child is due to start. Parents / carers will meet both Headteacher and class teacher, spend some time in the class-room, have a chance to hear about the school and ask any questions they may have.

You are invited to a further meeting with the headteacher and class teacher after approximately half a term, at which time our approach to teaching and learning, with particular reference to Maths and English, is dealt with in detail.

We enjoy close relationships with local play-groups and nurseries and are building good links to help make the transition as smooth and informative as possible.

If parents / carers have any concerns or questions at any time, the headteacher and staff are always willing to talk to you. An issue, which may seem trivial to you could be very important to your child and can often be cleared up by a short chat in school.

Children from our school usually transfer to Meadowhead School after Year 6, though this is primarily dependent on whether their home address is in the Meadowhead catchment area. Parents / carers still have the right to request a place at any other secondary school. Information to this effect is sent home in the Autumn term of the child's last year in primary school.

Further information can be obtained from the LEA’s admissions office. Tel: 0114 2735766
